We are located in Colorado Springs, Colorado at 6,250 feet above sea level,
at the base of Pikes Peak
(summit 14,110 feet above sea level) and almost smack dab in the geographic center of the highest state. We are located in the heart of one of the most pleasant, agreeable, safe, accessible downtown districts in the country. If you are a brave soul check out the
Chinook History
for a more detailed exposé, but here are some highlights:
-
Opened in 1959 by Dick and Judy Noyes
-
Chinook occupies 8,300 square feet of prime retail space
-
Other than Dick and Judy Noyes, we have some employees who have legendary longevity at Chinook - 35 years, 32 years, 31 years, 27 years, and 22 years 5 months 2 weeks 7 days and 6.5 hours, to mention just a few. The unique part of this is that they will be the ones to help you when you call or come in to the store. Knowledge is our business. Our core of faithful, brilliant employees excel at knowing books, authors and publishers better than anyone else, anywhere, and would love to share their expertise with you.
-
Being Professional Booksellers, we don't really go for bells and whistles like the impersonal chain bookstores. We do have chairs and tables spaced throughout the store, a playhouse with its legendary stuffed Monkeys and some soft pillows in the kids' room, and free coffee for our customers. But no cafe, no magazines, no escalators - just good old-fashioned bookselling know-how. A place where you can feel comfortable.
-
We sell some Chinook paraphernalia - two styles of T-shirts, a bookbag and coffee mugs. The shirts come in S, M, L, XL and some XXL, some gray, some black and some blue. They have our name and logo on the front. One says "Readin' Rots the Mind" (the phrase comes from the book
Rabbit Hill
by Robert Lawson, which won the Newbery Award for children's literature in 1945) and the other says "Just Say Know. Read!" The bookbags and mugs are black with our name and logo. Call us to order them.
